Winamp causing removable USB drive errors

I’ve got one of these:

Box2s M2 USB Card Reader

It’s the M2 USB card reader from Box2s with enough slots to read pretty much any memory card out there. It works really and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

However, when Winamp is running and you put a memory card into the reader then plug it into a USB slot, Winamp causes Windows to throw up errors about missing drives. This is because Winamp recognises a new removable drive and tries to read the contents. Some of the drives, though, are empty. I mean, who really fills all the slots with a card of each type every time anyway? Not me.

Hardware- and Windows-wise, the problem happens because this device adds 4 new drive letters to your Windows configuration (the drive letters will vary depending on your build). With a single memory card plugged into the reader and the other reader slots empty Winamp tries to read them and causes Windows to have a fit.

Solution: Don’t have Winamp running when you plug the card reader into a USB slot! It’s a pain but some things just aren’t perfect …
